Good news! I have spoken to the wife of Byron Preiss, the man who created The Secret: A Treasure Hunt! book. Contrary to recent reports, the gems still exist. The keys are still in play. The game is still on! I am working with Tyler Davidson, producer of the Sundance hits Take Shelter, Compliance, Kings of Summer, and The Signal, and his group at Low Spark Films, on a documentary about this fascinating book and adventure. This summer we are traveling across the country, interviewing the people who worked with Byron to create his wonderful book and the two groups who have successfully uncovered two keys. We will also attempt to unearth some new keys along the way. Obviously, you all are the most passionate key hunters in this quest and it's awesome that this book, which was published in 82, still has such an effect on all of us. I would love to speak with you if you've worked on this mystery, here. Please shoot me a message: jameswrenner at gmail dot com. Best, James Renner

WhiteRabbit

Cool! Good luck James...great to see Byron's puzzle commemorated. Keep us posted. I'm sure everyone will be surprised and intrigued to know that the gem prizes are still available. Maybe you could get in touch with Brick Tower Press, who own the rights to the book, about issuing an updated Kindle edition.

tjgrey

Nice! Glad this is getting some recognition! I think it's been long enough that the hunt might have a better chance of progressing if it gained more public attention. And if this builds more of a case (gives us more weight) to persuade some parks/areas to dig, I'm all for it! What all did Bryon's wife have to say about it?

rookhunter

This is the best news i've heard in a long time!

JamesRenner

I am visiting Byron's widow at the end of the month. Should have more to report then. Lots lined up in the next couple weeks. Does anyone on here do Skype? I'd love to talk about this mystery.

I would love to talk with you if you make it up to Milwaukee. I am working on tracking down the Milwaukee Cask. -Mike [email protected]

WhiteRabbit

Fox? Forest? Malted? Where are y'all...? Come and be interviewed...

forest_blight

Oh I'm here, I'm just not the interview type! I'm happy to help answer questions about the hunt, James -- I've been on it for about 10 years now, working on all 12 casques. I even dug once (Milwaukee), but turned up nothing but tree roots, can tabs, and despair. My biggest recommendation is to put in the time and read *all* of the forum posts, going back to, what, 2001? It's a big task, but will give you a complete chronology of the hunt and tell you who figured out what, and when.

erexere

There have been many great moments over the years. I nominate the occasion when wilhouse commandered a backhoe in Houston as a highlight to be considered for this documentary project should it discuss any of the infamous attempts for a casque. Maltedfalcon has had an exhaustive trial in SF at the Palace of the Legion of Honor. There must be other attempts that will remain private for whatever applicable reasons. Some casques are thought to be unrecoverable, however, we cant know for sure until we've tried. I think the most favorable location to give attention to is in NOLA, despite the effects of Katrina, since, IMHO, the specific points of reference remain in their original positions. The digging of a hole is all that remains to be done. At one time I thought the flood would shift the soil and anything buried in it, but I think that all depends on the level and condition of the surface. In this case, its a grass covered level area stabilized by palm trees and curb boundaries along Basin Street. According to satellite imagry the turf has been scraped around the intact palms and replanted with new grass along with the introduction of four new smaller trees or shrubs. When we look at each prospect site we really have to investigate how each has been subject to real events.

fox

Very exciting news indeed. Boogie and I dug in a park in NY City but came up empty. Funny little story goes along with that dig regarding a shovel. I've been on this thread since the beginning.....since I was the one who brought the Secret Thread to this message board.

JamesRenner

Just an update. We met with Rob Wrobel and Eric Gasiorowski in Chicago this past weekend. What a blast. Rob gave us a tour of Grant park where they found the key in 1983. Later on Sat. we all traveled up to Milwaukee and dug around up there. BoingBoing has a story about the hunt, today, too. hxxp://boingboing.net/2014/07/15/the-quest-to-find-12-hidden-tr.html

I wish I would have know you guys were coming to Milwaukee... We have been making some headway on the hunt here recently. If you make it back, please hit me up. Here is the active thread for Milwaukee... image 10: viewtopic.php?f=32&t=773 And here is a Flickr Album I have put together of clues in MKE: https://www.flickr.com/photos/scallywag ... 709486983/ -Mike

maltedfalcon

Just had a really nice skype chat with James Renner. I enjoyed talking with you . Good luck on your project!.

erexere

@maltedfalcon, that's fantastic news! I'm of the opinion that among the most diligent casque-questers, you've been the closest to proving a general location. I hope you find it someday, but for now the casque must sit in limbo under the watchful eye of Frank Morris.

maltedfalcon

So James told me he asked BP's wife, and while she has the jewels, she has no idea what any of the solutions are or where the casques are located. So only a found casque/Key will count.

DocZ

Some elements of the story about the documentary do not fit. From what I have gleaned from various posts and various articles/interviews I have read: First: A) Byron Preiss took pictures of the landmarks around the locations where he buried the casques in addition to taking pictures of the actual burial sites. B) Preiss gave the pictures of the surroundings to John Pierard, the artist so that Pierard could incorporate landmarks into the pictures as visual clues. In an interview Pierard once commented that he watched Preiss bury the Cleveland treasure, but all he got was the pictures of the landmarks for the other treasures, so that he did not know the exact locations of the other treasures. C) Preiss then put the pictures into the lock box WITH THE JEWELS to use as a reference when someone sent the form in to guess the location of a burial. I think it was in one of the threads on this board where people were emailing him guesses about locations, but somewhere I saw the comment that even Preiss didn't remember the exact location of some of his burials, but said he would check the pictures when he went to retrieve the gem in 2005. So if his wife found the actual gems, then she found the pictures. Why would she say she does not know the actual locations? Second: A) Byron Preiss took a reeeeeally long time to retrieve the gem in 2005. Some people even posted jokingly that maybe he no longer had access to the original gems and that he needed time to run out and buy a replacement gem to give as a reward. Third: A) In an article about the unsolved Milwaukee picture, there is a comment that the original gems were auctioned off to pay the debts for the companies that went bankrupt after Preiss died. Do most reporters (a) just make assumptions - like assuming that the gems are not available after the bankruptcy proceedings - and then report the stuff they made up?, (b) report rumors about what happened to the gems as fact?, or (c) actually try to verify the facts that they report? Whether or not the gems were included in the assets that were auctioned off is a verifiable/falsifiable piece of information which a reporter would have tried to confirm, not just taking it at face value when he was told. B) If the gems really were auctioned, then they are no longer there for Mrs. Preiss to find. C) If they were not really auctioned because the key to the lock box was missing (although the box could always be drilled by the bank under orders from the executor of the estate upon proof of the owner's death), then isn't there a legal obligation of the widow to turn them in to the creditors once they are found? -------------------------------------- Bottom Line: I think Mr Renner is not being truthful about the status of the Jewels on this treasure hunt. I think the possibilities are: A) The jewels were really misplaced around the time of Byron Preiss' death and avoided the auction block. As Mr. Renner claims, Mrs. Preiss found them but did not turn them over to the creditors. But in that case, she found the pictures too and knows the locations. We are being lied to when we are told that she does not know the location. The lie is intended to keep up the mystery and to keep up the search - in order to make the documentary more interesting. In that case, I don't see a need for the lie. I would not search any less if we were told she "won't" reveal the locations instead of she "can't" reveal the locations? But make no mistake, if she really found the jewels, we ARE being lied to. OR B) The jewels and the pictures were lost sometime before 2005. Preiss bought a replacement jewel to give as a reward in 2005. The jewels have still not been found. In order to drum up interest for the documentary, Mr. Renner and Mrs. Preiss have agreed to buy additional replacement jewels if anyone finds another casque. Again, I would continue the search just for the thrill of the hunt, even if I was getting a replacement jewel. But that does not change the fact that, if this is the case, they are lying to us about the source of the jewels for the sake of keeping our interest high - the jewels we are getting are not the originals. OR C) The jewels really were never lost and were auctioned off, as was previously reported by a reporter who verified his facts. This again implies that in order to drum up interest for the documentary, Mr. Renner and Mrs. Preiss have agreed to buy replacement jewels if anyone finds another casque. As I said above, I would continue the search just for the thrill of the hunt. But again, if this is the case, they are lying to us about the source of the jewels for the sake of keeping our interest high - the jewels we are getting are not the originals. The bottom line is that there is an internal inconsistency in here somewhere. I will still search for the casques, but I would prefer for Mr. Renner to tell the truth about his project.

DocZ

Do you see what happens when you get a bunch of cranial, puzzle solving people together. They tend to over think EVERYTHING.

erexere

I'm not going to defend Mr. Renner. I'm just going to drink another shot of tequila and say who gives a fck about the jewels. The jewels aren't special. I can go to a jeweler and ask for any type of stone and they'll produce something based on what I can afford. The real reward in this hunt is simply an experience in taking a theory and a shovel to a square of dig-dirt and bam-voila, casque. Those damn verses are hellacious. The answers to some we may never know. Whatever the case with Mr. Renner, he or anyone can lie all they might, but in the end, it's just another shovel and should it lead to a successful dig, then we all might be happy for something.

Egbert

I will be meeting James Renner this weekend, supposedly for my interview, and I hope to get some more answers for you regarding the jewels and the solutions. Somewhere in these threads is my account of getting the jewel from BP. It was an unexpected adventure, and he took Siskel and I into the bank vault. The jewels were there, but not the solutions. So, I can easily see a situation where the jewels were found again by his wife, but the solutions are still lost.

rookhunter

erexere wrote:: The jewels aren't special. I can go to a jeweler and ask for any type of stone and they'll produce something based on what I can afford. Ugh I hate to agree with Eric, the jewels are not important but the hunt itself.

forest_blight

I have to agree here. Solving a riddle would be way more satisfying than a jewel. If someone offered me the choice between (a) solving one of these and (b) taking a jewel for free, you know what my reply would be. But if I could have both, I wouldn't say no.

cw0909

agreed about the solutions, they could have been in another box, or more likely 12 file folders with img and pics to img, in a file cabinet, and those could be in storage someplace, or tossed because no one knew

erexere

I rented Kings of Summer. Good movie.

I want a casque, I don't want a gem. I also want the key. Those are unique pieces of art that as of right now only 2 people in the world have. I can go buy a Diamond or a Peridot with money, just like anyone else. If I dig one up I don't plan on turning it in for the prize.

Yes, just the satisfaction of solving even small parts of this puzzle. There is also what I call " play value" whereby hours and hours of amusement can be had for a small outlay. About time we had a status report from James Renner?

Unknown: Subject: Re: The Secret - Byron Preiss From: johnjudepalencar Date: Thu, 30 Oct 2014 17:44:54 -0400 To Whom it may concern - The information you have is false and woefully incorrect. Mrs. Priess is not honoring any treasure finds. She no longer owns the intellectual property rights. Byron Preiss Visual Publication contracts and copyrights etc... were sold in a bankruptcy sale years ago. The book is out of print. Should the new owners of the intellectual property rights resurrect this book, it will be their decision. I cannot and will not help anyone find any treasures. I don't know where they are. So please let the treasure finding community know this fact! Let it also be know that I will not respond to any future email messages or phone calls regarding "The Secret " treasures. I had an interesting email from a new puzzler he invited me to share. (He'd just come across the book and sent a polite enquiry to JJP about it.) I guess JJP might be wrong about the gems...? Sounds like James couldn't get hold of him. Dunno. He's clearly not going to respond to any more enquiries though. Maybe Oregonian or someone could put a note on the homepage/WIKI. (On the other hand, I would exhort people to keep trying for a statement from Kelly. I want to hear something from that dude, even if it's "Buzz off!")

Oregonian

WhiteRabbit wrote:: Maybe Oregonian or someone could put a note on the homepage/WIKI. WhiteRabbit wrote:: I guess JJP might be wrong about the gems...? Absolutely. The wiki's "History" page is the place that gives the information about the different people involved in the book, and I've reproduced that full e-mail in the section for John Jude Palencar. I've also added an editor's note asking people to refrain from contacting him. (If anyone else involved in the book wants to have a similar "do not disturb" note added to their entries, they should just send me a note to that effect.) I doubt it. What he said sounds pretty accurate to me.

WhiteRabbit

Cheers Oregonian. Great work on the Wiki BTW. It might be a bit early to dismiss Renner's claims...didn't he go out treasure-hunting with Byron's daughters...? While JJP seems to have avoided anything to do with the puzzle for years...

rookhunter

WhiteRabbit wrote:: ...didn't he go out treasure-hunting with Byron's daughters...? Wow! DId he tell you that? Where did you hear that? Very interesting.

Egbert

James Renner went treasure hunting with one of BP's daughters and Siskel. Hopefully, it will be in the documentary. As for what JJP says about the gems, JJP is correct that the rights to the book were sold to someone else. However, it could be that BP's wife actually found the jewels, and is willing to give them away to whomever finds a casque. You don't have to have the rights to the book to be willing to do that.

WhiteRabbit

See Siskel's report here... viewtopic.php?f=32&t=728&p=128185&hilit=Renner#p128185

erexere

That's a weird message. Its been long been established that JJP wasn't going to contribute his help in any way. I don't see any reason to doubt Renner. Looking forward to see his project completed. I believe someone will find a casque someday soon. That's the news I'm most concerned with.

Oregonian

The e-mail from John Jude Palencar is just a simple (and obvious) statement of fact. The jewels associated with The Secret were not some personal gift that Byron Preiss was providing to the treasure hunters. They were the central component of the entire search and they were the property of Byron Preiss Visual Publications and iBooks Inc. When the company declared bankruptcy after Preiss's death, all assets were sold off in an auction. The jewels therefore belong to whoever bought those assets. (Even if the jewels were only rediscovered much later, they still belong to whoever bought the assets .) If the claims from James Renner are to be believed, it would mean that Mrs. Preiss stole $10,000 worth of jewels from whoever bought the assets of her late husband's company. Furthermore, it would also mean that she didn't steal the jewels in any way to benefit herself, but that she stole them to give to complete strangers who might find some crumbling ceramic vases in the ground. And, finally, it would mean that Mrs. Preiss stole these jewels to give to random strangers but then failed to make any public announcement of any kind about how to claim the jewels or even about the fact that they were still available. I say: Baloney. Mrs. Preiss has no motivation to commit such a bizarre and pointless felony. Mr. Renner has every motivation to drum up attention and excitement about The Secret in advance of his "documentary." In the absence of other evidence, Occam's razor suggests that Mr. Renner is simply lying and the decision about whether to award the jewels to any future casque finders is in the hands of someone other than Mrs. Preiss.

JamesRenner

Wow. I didn't expect trolls in a treasure forum. People are alike all over, I guess. So, quick update. The doc is nearly completed. I saw the email from John. He CCd me, actually. And I have spoken to him since. He was misinformed. Sandi has the gems and will honor the treasure hunt. She says this in the doc. More soon.

Unknown: She says this in the doc Couldn't it also mean that Mrs. Preiss, in one way or another, took legal possession of the jewels, and has decided to honor her late husband's memory by keeping that facet of the hunt alive? Or perhaps her intention is to reward anyone who takes legal possession of a casque with a substitute jewel of her choosing, for the same reason. IANAL, but I can't see why she couldn't do this if she so decided. The fact is, until the situation moves from speculation to reality, (that is, until we dig another one of these out of the ground) neither she, not anyone associated with The Secret is under any obligation to tell us anything. We are on our own, and this has been made clear to us time and time again. But if they do, then I'm willing to assume the information is true until proven otherwise.

JamesRenner

I would love to dig in Brooklyn again! Where you thinking? I think we'll be posting clips from the doc around Jan.

maltedfalcon

James, you are so correct, Oregonian is simply a troll, over on the secret wiki, if you dare to post an update that differs from Oregonians. he has your editing capabilities deleted. hope that kind of anti-social behavior doesn't color the hunt for other people. Cheers! Matt

Trohn

So my son, 13, told me about something he read about on a gamers site... famous lost treasures. He read old me about the one that interested him the most - the Secret. I laughed and started to explain it to me... when I held up my hand for silence - went into my closet and pulled out my twenty-five year old book and tossed it to saying ' don't lose my notes'. That was a week ago. I explain the groups and the individual city prides that this hunt generates.... and the fact that you must know the world as it was in1981 to have any hope of finding what has been lost. I then fully explain my two complete solves One totally lost in time and the Other totally sealed in ceremony. Both as strong and confident as when I pieces them together back in 2000s. Do I have any incentive to stir a nest to unearth the one I know I can....most likely getting as much resistance as they have had in Florida. Send me a line if interested. I am sure a lot of the founders here know me and what my location is.... maybe a camera crew and a documentary could pave the way for an afternoon dig with friends. John. [email protected]

I remember reading a article saying there will be one in New York couple weeks ago....

I follow his Twitter feed. I can let you know if the film is shown again. https://twitter.com/JamesRenner/status/ ... 6143355904

I know someone who saw it. They said erexere malted and wilhouse were in it, in snippets. None of them will be happy with how they are portrayed. Brian and Andy got a good bit of screentime, as did Ben and Jo-Ellen. JJP didnt seem impressed with how he was portrayed, but that's just an opinion... he didnt comment. The audio and visual production was bad. Several shots were out of focus, or had focus changes in the middle of the shot... but this may not be the final edit so who knows. It seems to be more of a basic primer on the hunt, and it sounds like its enjoyable... but mabey a bit campy and try-hard. In the end Renner used the ctown verse and sf image to dig a statue that was commissioned in 2005. They make a joke of that. :/ I'll wait for a screener.

I enjoyed my chats with James. Crappy coffee shop wifi on camera makes for a realistic doc.
